Alignment First: Why Strategy Fails Without a Unified Team
You have a strategic plan. It is excellent. Your leadership team has never read it.
Most strategic plans do not fail because of bad ideas. They fail because the team that needs to execute them is not aligned. The alignment gap is where strategy goes to die. It is also where STRATPRO begins.
The Principle: Alignment Before Strategy
STRATPRO, the NIRMAKO strategic planning method, follows a six-stage cycle: ALIGN, VISION, DIAGNOSE, PLAN, EXECUTE, OPTIMIZE. Alignment comes first. Not second. Not after the plan. First.
The reasoning is simple. A brilliant plan will not survive a leadership team that is not aligned. When every manager pulls toward a different goal, the plan collapses in execution, not in theory.
Signs Your Team Is Not Aligned
- Management meetings become power arenas, not decision rooms
- Each department head pulls in a different direction
- Decisions made in meetings are not executed afterward
- Internal politics drain energy from the real work
- "We do not speak the same language" is a common complaint
If you recognize three or more of these signs, the problem is not your strategy. It is your alignment. Fixing the plan before fixing the alignment is fixing the wrong thing.
The Two Tools That Build Alignment
STRATPRO uses two specific tools in the alignment phase. Both take about two weeks. Both are prerequisites for everything that follows.
| Tool | What It Produces |
|---|---|
| DISC Assessment | Understanding of how each manager communicates, decides, and handles conflict |
| Communications Charter | Written commitment to healthy communication, conflict resolution, and removing internal politics |
DISC is not a personality test for fun. It is a tool to understand work styles. A high-D CEO and a high-S operations manager will clash not because they disagree, but because they communicate differently. DISC names the gap. The Communications Charter closes it.
Alignment Questions to Ask Now
- Which members of your leadership team have completed a DISC assessment?
- What happens in your management meetings: decisions or endless discussion?
- When two managers conflict, how is it resolved?
- Are there written, agreed communication rules?
- Who in your leadership team is the quietest in meetings? Who is the most dominant?
If you cannot answer these questions quickly, alignment is the gap. Not strategy.
What Alignment Produces
An aligned leadership team does not mean everyone agrees on everything. It means everyone uses the same language, understands the same goals, and knows what the other managers are working toward. When alignment exists, KPI alignment follows naturally. When it does not, no number of KPI dashboards will fix it.
Alignment also changes the quality of management meetings. Meetings shift from reporting to deciding. From politics to accountability. From protecting territory to solving problems together.
The Expert: Nir Makovsky
Nir Makovsky is the founder of NIRMAKO and the owner of the TAB Israel franchise. He has run more than 100 strategic planning processes with leadership teams in Israel. The pattern repeats: the plan is rarely the problem. Alignment is.
STRATPRO was built to address this directly. Alignment is not a warm-up exercise. It is the foundation. Skip it, and the entire planning cycle sits on sand.
What to Do Now
If your leadership team has never gone through a structured alignment process, that is your first step. Not the strategic plan. Not the KPI dashboard. Alignment.
